Welcome to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad rolling stock database--a project of the Friends of the C&TS. The rolling stock database contains entries for all of the railroad's locomotives and cars, both historic and non-historic, including those currently on the roster as well as equipment that formerly belonged to the railroad.

To get started, simply select the type of equipment that you would like to view using the Quick Select menu above, or enter the number of a car or locomotive in the search filed below the menu and click the Search button. Additional information about using the database is described below.

Lists by Category or Type

The rolling stock database permits you to retrieve lists of C&TS rolling stock using a variety of criteria, sorted in a number of possible orders. You can produce a list of a given type or category of rolling stock by selecting it from the 'Quick Select' menu, or by clicking any value shown in the Type, Class or Category columns.

Filtering

You can filter the list of rolling stock using the check boxes at the top of the page. The check boxes filter as follows:

Current	Rolling stock that is currently on the C&TS roster.
Dispersed	Rolling stock that is no longer on the C&TS roster because it has been sold, traded, destroyed, or otherwise dispose of; or rolling stock that was intended for the C&TS but was never delivered by the D&RGW; or questionable entries in other rosters.
Converted	Rolling stock that was previously on the C&TS roster under another number, but has since been converted to a different kind of car and renumbered. An example would be a boxcar that was converted to a boxcar coach.
Historic	D&RG(W) rolling stock that was used in the Rio Grande days.
Non-Historic	Rolling stock that has been brought to the railroad since its acquisition from the Rio Grande, and is not authentic to the D&RG(W).

Sorting

Any list of rolling stock can be sorted by any of the column headings by clicking on the heading.

Searching

You can search for a given piece of rolling stock by entering its number or name in the text entry field and clicking the "Search" button. You can also bring up the record for an individual item by clicking its name or number in any list that your produce. Many of the values shown for a single item, such as its type or class, can be clicked to produce lists based on that value.

Photographs

The database includes photographs for most items. By default, the rolling stock lists do not include photographs in order to make the download from the server to your computer faster. However, by checking the "Small" or "Large" buttons in the Photos section at the top of the page, you can produce lists with photos.

Photographs, if available, are always included when the record for an individual car is displayed. You can toggle between small and large photographs by clicking on the displayed photo.

Credits

The rolling stock database was created by Curt Bianchi, who also maintains it. Several individuals have helped by contributing information to the database. Phil McDonald, Don Richter, Douglas Van Veelen, and Tom Eikerenkotter provided rosters that were used as a starting point. Terry Ross provided a roster of equipment as purchased from the D&RGW in 1970. John Craft provided information about the passenger cars. Dave Dye generously offered the use of his photographs. Tom Cardin, Randy Buchter, and Tad Arnold provided photographs. Mike Peltier provided information about the tank cars. John Cole and Dave Ferro helped to sort out the motor cars.

The C&TS Dispatch, the official publication of the Friends, contains a wealth of information about the work that has been performed on the locomotives and cars since 1988. This information has been incorporated into the database to the greatest extent possible! Thanks to Dispatch editor Art Nichols, and former co-editor Steve Schroeder for their years of hard work.

The locomotive work histories primarly come from reports written in the Dispatch, and later, the C&TS RR Commission Conductor, written by railroad personnel--usually the Chief Mechanical Officer. Thanks to Russell Fischer, John Bush, Gerald Blea, Mark Yates, Julio Antillon, and especially Earl Knoob, for their many years of excellent reports.

Herbert Danneman, author of Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Varnish and A Ticket to Ride the Narrow Gauge, granted permission to liberally use the material in his book.
